Controlling quantum systems with the highest possible quality is central to our hopes of large-scale quantum technologies. It is doubly so for open quantum systems, i.e., noisy quantum systems, as they are the building block of any physical implementation of such technologies. In a nutshell, the approach of our group can be reduced to: “know thy enemy” and “crush it” with that knowledge.
We do this by developing the theoretical tools allowing us to characterize the noise affecting a quantum system, by using the quantum system itself (or a spectator closely related to it) as a probe to the environment generating the noise. Further, using this knowledge we devise (off-line, software based) optimal control protocols capable of achieving high fidelities for desired target operations. We rely of analytical and statistical tools to achieve this, with a heavy complement of estimation, optimization, and machine learning tools.
